Ever looked at a Persian rug and found yourself gawking in awe? Ever wanted to MAKE something like that for TS2, but didn't know how to go about it? It's actually very easy - it only takes a few minutes!

I'm assuming that...

-You know how to use HomeCrafter Plus.
-You have an art program (like PSP) that has a Kaleidoscope effect.
-You know how to use said program.

  1. In HomeCrafter, create a new floor project. Open this into your art program.

  2. Make your new floor a single, solid color - preferably dark.

  3. Grab your brush tool. Put it on a relatively soft setting (for smooth lines.) Using PSP7, I've set mine to the following:

    Size: 7
    Hardness: 0
    Opacity: 100
    Step: 9
    Density: 100

  4. Find yourself another color, preferably one that's not too bright. (If you use lighter colors, use them minimally.) Draw some squiggly lines. Get another color. Repeat. And choose a third color and draw some more lines.

    Here's what I've got:

Here comes the fun part. The REALLY fun part.

  5. Load the Kaleidoscope tool. (Found under Effects> Reflection Effects> Kaleidoscope in PSP7.)

Horizonal Offset: Set it to whatever suits your fancy.
Vertical Offset: Again, meddle with it all you want.
Rotation Angle: Since we want our floors to match up properly on the sides, set this to either 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or 270 degrees.
Scale Factor: Whatever you want, really. I recommend somewhere between -50 and -80.
Number of Petals: Since we want the floor to match up on the ends, set this to any even number. (But I don't recommend going above eight..)
Number of Orbits: This does funky stuff, but we don't need it for this project.
Radial Suction: We aren't going to need this one.

  6. Now, play around with the settings until you get something you like. Set the Petal count to 4, 6, or 8, your choice. (I'm using 6 right now.) Choose OK. Here's what I've got:

  7. Now, load up the Kaleidoscope tool again. THIS is where it gets really interesting. Play with the settings until you get something you like. If you want, change the number of petals. (I'm changing mine to 4.) Click OK. Here's what I have:

  8. You should now have a very striking pattern. Save it and see how it looks in HomeCrafter Plus.

    Tah-DAAAAAH!

If you want to give it a ruglier texture, read on. As far as I know, this will only work in PSP.

  9. Create a new Raster Layer.

  10. Fill the new layer with gray - #808080 in specific. You won't see any difference, but don't worry - your fill is there.

  11. Load the Add Noise box; (Effects> Noise> Add) set it anywhere from 10-20. (I'm using 17.) Choose "Uniform" if it's not selected already. Click OK.

That's it! You're done! Enter the information for your carpet in HomeCrafter Plus and Import it. Here's my finished product:

-You can also use the Add Noise trick to make any carpet, patterned or solid. Given that the Noise has color, though, you may want to recolor it so as to be monochrome.

-This tutorial should also be applicable to area rugs.
